25 Years of Ownership - Six Stars!
by Skeezix on Monday, August 14, 2023
I purchased my 1993 T-100 SR-5 single cab 5-speed manual longbed 25 years ago and it was 5 years old at that time with 58,000 miles on the clock. It now has 352,000 miles and to date I have only had to do the following: replaced the transmission rear seal once at about 140,000 miles, replaced the clutch twice at 120,000 mile intervals after purchase (I tow a lot), rebuilt the clutch cylinder and replaced the U-joints once at the second clutch change, replaced the alternator at about 200,000 miles, replaced the power steering pump that started leaking at about 250,000 miles, and finally replaced the timing belt at 330,000 miles when the original water pump finally started leaking. The a/c is still cold and has never needed a recharge, which is saying something in the desert. For routine maintenance I've replaced belts, hoses, spark plugs and brake pads before it was needed - all of two or three times. Other than the clutch work, I have done all the maintenance and repairs myself. In 25 years, not including tires every 50k miles or so, I have not spent more that $4,000 total in maintenance. She's a little tired but still runs pretty strong, doesn't burn more than 1/2 quart of oil every 3,000 miles, and has never left me stranded on the side of the road, ever. Considering that I paid $11,000 cash for it in 1998, and today I can still sell it for about half that much, my total cost of ownership has been a pittance and the truck owes me nothing. I fully expect to get another ten years out of "Goldy" before I quite driving. This is my third Toyota truck since 1978 and I have done more than 600,000 miles of driving between them. The other two (Japan-built, not U.S.-built) were just as good. - 5.0
People leave notes on my truck to try and buy it!

Might be the best gas engine vehicle ever made. Smooth, reliable, durable. My mechanic changed the oil and said, "Don't ever sell that truck; they're better than new ones. And if you do, call me first!" - 5.0
Great value and durability

The truck was bought from an individual about 10yrs ago with 40K miles. It is now on its 3rd hundred thousand. Motor oil is still fresh amber 1,000 miles after a change. None needed between changes. It has dragged boats twice its size, been stuck in mud numerous time, jumped a ditch and bent the frame, had the hood crushed and windshield and grill smashed by a ice loaded falling tree. It has taken two sons through their teens into and out of college. And still drives like a Caddy on the interstate, in the lower 20's mpg. It's easy on tires, the Bilstein shocks on front were all it needed. We ALL love the old truck.
